WE GREEN WHERE POSSIBLE

WE CONDUCT RESEARCH

WE ORGANISE IMPACT EVENTS

This is what we do

Our ambition is to create a liveable street for all life: people, plants, and animals.

We do this by greening wherever possible, conducting research, and organising impact events.

What does that look like?

  • Planting over 125,000 pesticide-free bulbs

  • Creating 40+ metres of green waterfront, EcoBanks, along the Singelgracht

  • Developing two native, pesticide-free gardens in the Carel Willink Plantsoen

  • Transforming 1,300 m² of grey, paved parking space into 900+ m² of greenery and walking paths

  • Research into air quality, bird sounds, waste, noise, and more

  • Collaborations with students from vocational education, universities of applied sciences, and research universities

  • Our annual, well-attended Clean Up the City event

  • Rescuing over 3,000 m² of greenery and giving it a second life in people’s homes

This is how a street starts to breathe again.

This is who we are

A green movement

The Green Mile is a positive, green movement. For and with everyone who wants to contribute to a liveable Stadhouderskade for people, plants, and animals. We work to turn ambition into reality and we never do this alone. We do this together with residents, businesses, organisations and the municipality of Amsterdam.

Our events, greening projects, and research are infectious : fun, beautiful, educational and innovative. With a strong dose of creativity and enthusiasm, we raise awareness and set people in motion. As a result, the green footprint naturally grows, the movement expands, and new Green Miles emerge everywhere.

Foundation and initiative

In 2020, six organisations on and around the Stadhouderskade transformed an intrinsic need into action: making their everyday working and living environment liveable again.

UNS, De Nederlandsche Bank, Blending Bricks, the Rijksmuseum, the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences and Heineken, all based on or near the Stadhouderskade, initiated The Green Mile and defined a shared ambition: a green, liveable street for all life.

Our three pillars

pillars grey white green.jpg

To create a Green Mile, we work with others, fuelled by positive energy and creativity.

The goal? Connection. With each other, and with nature.

Everything we do grows from our three pillars: nature – awareness – community. These pillars are always interconnected.

So when we green a place, much more happens than just adding plants:

  • Nature gets space, helping the climate

  • We learn, observe, and grow more aware

  • People reconnect; the neighbourhood comes together again

Everything is connected. Sometimes you see it immediately, sometimes you feel it later—but it’s always there.
