Exploring the Ecological Impact of the EcoWall with Yuverta Students

On 13 May, we joined students from the Applied Biology programme at Yuverta to investigate the ecological impact of the EcoWal.
Although it is still early, with the EcoWal having been in place for just eight months, it was an exciting opportunity to see how nature is already responding. Joining the fieldwork were Debora Treep (Yuverta lecturer), Laurens Duiveman (Yuverta lecturer), Amber Beernink (Water Caravan), and Jorine Noordman, ecologist at the City of Amsterdam.
We explored the EcoWallen aboard Gerarda, the oldest vessel in the De Kooij fleet, built in 1938. Among the species recorded were tiny fish, freshwater amphipods and water fleas. Above the water, the strong wind and rain meant fewer species were observed, but we did spot some such as the felted mining bee (Andrena fuscipes) and several ladybirds.
