Today, two beautiful, native gardens were created in the Carel Willinkplantsoen. The design was crafted by Alies Fernhout from Alies Natuurlijk, who also provided the pesticide-free plants. Alies is a pesticide-free grower in Lutkemeerpolder, meaning no chemical pesticides or artificial fertilizers are used. This is crucial for biodiversity, as insects, butterflies, bees, and other animals are harmed by plants grown with chemicals. When purchasing plants it is a good idea to keep this in mind. You can find a list of pesticide-free suppliers here.
Together with Sanne Horn, designer of the Rijkstuinen, Jurjen Hoogervorst, a teacher at Yuverta, and five students from the Yuverta program "Livable City and Climate," the plants were carefully planted. A special thanks to our partner LIDL for providing refreshments.
The internship program at Yuverta is aimed at making the landscaping profession, particularly working with planting in urban environments, more attractive and at improving the level of knowledge. The focus of the internship program is on:
Plant knowledge (including native species): Enhancing understanding of various plants, particularly those native to the region.
Sustainable management of urban vegetation: Emphasizing soil care, ecology, and a general understanding of how plants function in urban settings.
Improving communication between designers and managers: Encouraging designers to create with maintenance in mind and teaching managers more about design and the relevant questions they should ask.
Enhancing the image of the landscaper: Aiming to inspire more young people and career changers to pursue a career in green spaces.
